Bee Syrup Mixing Chart

What is sugar syrup for bees?
Sugar syrup is either a 1 to 1 or 2 to 1 ratio of sugar to water. It is used to supplement the bees’ diet to help the colony survive and remain healthy.
Why make sugar syrup for bees?
Bees have to build a lot of honeycombs. The energy to do this generally comes from nectar obtained from flowers, but if there are no flowers blooming, beekeepers can use sugar syrup to provide food that bees can use to produce honey.
Directions for Mixing Sugar Syrup
1:1 - Bee Sugar Syrup for Spring and Summer – Encourages Brood Rearing & Comb Building.

- 4lbs (8 cups sugar) to 1/2 gallon (64 oz.) of water
- 2lbs (4 cups sugar) to 1 quart (32 oz.) of water
- 1lbs (2 cups sugar) to 1 pint (16 oz.) of water
2:1 - Bee Sugar Syrup for Fall and Winter – Encourages Food Storage – Honey for Winter
A 2 to 1 mixture of sugar water is 2 parts sugar and 1 part water. For example, you could use:
- 16lbs (32-1/2 cups sugar) to 1 gallon (128 oz.) of water
- 4lbs (16-1/4 cups sugar) to 1/2 gallon (64 oz.) of water
- 2lbs (8 cups sugar) to 1 quart (32 oz.) of water
- 1lbs (4 cups sugar) to 1 pint (16 oz.) of water
Bee Safety Alert: Do not boil sugar water. This could result in sick/dead bees.
Types of Feeders
A top feeder attaches to the top of the hive and can be filled without opening the hive.
In-hive feeders provide food in the hive for the bees. While the hive must be opened in order to feed the bees or clean the feeder, they do keep bees safer from other bee colonies and pests.
Entrance Feeders consist of a container that is outside the hive, and has a feeding tray that slides into the entrance of the hive. The container dispenses syrup onto the feeding tray for the bees.
